Location: LSBU's Southwark Campus & Online
Led by industry experts with extensive leadership experience within all areas of healthcare planning, the course sets the planning process within its political and socio-economic context and addresses organisational and managerial issues which determine and affect the delivery of clinical services. The course also examines health facility planning, concentrating on the processes which lead to the provision of fit-for-purpose, sustainable healthcare buildings that address current and future needs.
No specific qualifications are required but the course assumes an academic qualification in a relevant field and/or experience working within a relevant sector related to the delivery of healthcare services or facilities.
This course is open to everyone interested but has been primarily developed for the following professionals involved in the planning and delivery of healthcare services and facilities:
The weekly modules cover the following topics: 1. Introduction to healthcare planning 2. Identifying health needs and developing policy 3. Strategic healthcare planning to address future trends 4. The business case process and procurement options 5. Redesigning clinical services to support patient-centred care 6. Project context, protocols and governance 7. Developing a project brief for healthcare facilities 8. Spatial planning and successful stakeholder engagement 9. The sustainability agenda & the impact of the built environment on health & wellbeing 10. Post-project evaluation & building visit
Participants will:
Marc has worked within the healthcare sector since 2000 and has been a partner at Murphy Philipps Architects since 2006. As well as working on a number of award-winning healthcare projects, Marc has been extensively involved with the writing of design guidance for the Department of Health and undertaken research relating to healthcare environments. He regularly presents at conferences, both in the UK and internationally, on issues including sustainability and innovative healthcare design.
In 2013, Marc completed a Masters’ degree with distinction in Planning Buildings for Health at the Medical Architecture Research Unit. Marc was previously the MSc Module Leader in 'Health Planning in Developing Countries' on the 'International Health Studies' masters' programme at London South Bank University.
He is currently undertaking a PhD at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, researching healthcare design and patient-centred care. Marc is also a faculty member of Building Blocks for Clinicians running seminars to support and empower clinicians involved in the development of new healthcare facilities.
Liz has a PhD in the relationship between ethical predisposition, governance and project success and works as a sessional lecturer for the University of Greenwich. Liz worked in the NHS as a nurse, client-side IT project manager and client-side project manager for community projects in the pre-construction phases.
Before becoming a project manager, Liz worked for the London Regional Office reviewing business cases for IT and contraction projects. More recently she was a senior lecturer at London South Bank University and University of Greenwich, lecturing in planning buildings for health and construction project management.
Liz now works with Marc Levinson in running seminars to support and empower clinicians involved in the development of new healthcare facilities. Liz regularly speaks at conferences and most recently chaired the session ‘Clinical innovation through design collaboration’.
Combination of lectures and participatory discussions. Whilst participants may benefit from additional suggested reading and preparation, there is no requirement to do so.
Each weekly evening session will include 2.5 hours of teaching/discussion time.
Combination of attendance and assessment of a submitted piece of work.
