The Human Performance Centre promotes healthy lifestyles, elite performance and innovation. With specialist biomechanics, physiology and gait analysis laboratories, we have assisted elite and Olympic level as well as developing athletes, and our reputation grows year on year.

This test will provide you with an assessment of your both your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold (AT). VO2max is the gold standard measurement of aerobic fitness. It can be used to compare your aerobic status to normative values for age, gender and sport as well as tracking the impact of training programmes on development of aerobic fitness.  The anaerobic threshold is used to identify and optimise individual training intensities and programmes and to monitor progress to performance goals. When measured with VO2max it can provide a better assessment of training status and is a more sensitive indicator of adaptations to training and fitness improvement.

• The time required for the assessment of VO2max and AT is 90-minutes including pretesting preparation and testing time.
• Exercise will be specific to performance needs (i.e. running, cycling, etc) and involve progressive increases in intensity over time.
• Gas exchange responses will be measured using breath-by-breath analysis during exercise to measure oxygen uptake and other relevant physiological measures of intensity.
• Collection of finger or ear lobe blood samples will be taken to measure the blood lactate response over the exercise bout
• Personalised report providing information on your VO2 max and how it compares to others of the same age, gender, and sport.
• Personalised report with training and/or competition recommendations will be provided.

We will meet you outside the Faraday Wing Building. From here we will direct you to E132 – Environmental Psychophysiology Laboratory - where the service will take place. Please see a picture of the laboratory below.
